I know why a raven is like a writing desk!  Or is it, a writing desk is like a raven?  Doesn’t matter, does  not  matter,  except I just checked my notes because apparently it does matter!  It’s – why is a raven like a writing desk?  I know, I know, pick me, pick me!

It’s the riddle Lewis Carroll meant to be unanswered.  Hence the Mad Hatter said he did not know.  But I know!  Why do I know?  A) I know a tad more than bupkiss.  Take that spell checker! and B) I need answers!  You can’t leave a question hanging, not even a riddle without an answer.

And the answer, drum roll please ….

because language can take you anywhere.  It can fly you to whole ‘nuther worlds, real and imagined.  Where do you want to go?  Take flight into any realm, any where, any time as any artful writer worth his weight in feather quills will tell you.

There you have it, the answer we’ve all been seeking or at least one of us has been.  But wait, there’s more to learn from Alice in Wonderland.  So much more.

Take the theme of champion, for instance.  The White Queen needed a champion.  Don’t we all need a champion?  How about being a champion of ourselves?  Being in our own corner.   Seeing the best of ourselves and pushing ourselves to the limits of that best-ness or much-ness as Mad Hatter called it.

To be anything else, to stagnate, to repeatedly fall back on our comfort zone is to shrivel and shrink back from who we are.  We’re not shrivelers (spell checker doesn’t know what the hell to do with that) we are revelers!  Revelers of ourselves.  We thrive on the fullness of our life well lived.

Never lose your much-ness, whatever that is, you are the one who can choose to dim your own light or not.  And isn’t that the message of Alice, the freedom to choose.  You make the path, too, just like Alice did when she diverted from what the compendium said must be.  And just like Alice this is YOUR dream, you get to choose.

What will subtract from your power to choose for yourself, is listening to what others want and finding ways to please them more than pleasing yourself.  Remember what Alice was told: You cannot live your life to please others because when you step out to face that creature, you will step out alone.  Though the Universe has our back, it has our back even more when we have our own.  There comes a time when regardless of who we love or who we are attached to, we step out alone.  We step out alone in our own truth, alone in our own power to choose, and alone in our own power to believe.

Believe in you most of all.  Let your light shine.  Let it shine and you will be your own champion.  And you’ll never look back with regret only forward with the new day to burst into all that this new day has to offer you.  And that my friends, is to drink from the eternal fountain of youth.

Shortly, I will be gone for most of February.  I thought I might leave you with a few oldies but goodies.  This one always makes me laugh!  There will be more to come!  And when I get back from my training, we’ll resume to our regularly scheduled programming.  Though “regular” is not a term typically ascribed to me :-)….enjoy until I am back…blackandwhite

From here on out, this blog will be in re-runs.  There will be a continual, unending loop of re-posts.  It will be boring, repetitious and worse yet, time will elongate during this period and appear to slow down.  Painfully so.

I’m just kidding!  My point and I do have one, she says snarkily, is that even a word?  Back to my point, the little locally focused me – the one that goes to sleep and thinks she is separate from God/Source/Universe et al.  The one who thinks banging it into place still works.  The one who believes that all forms of fretting will keep any negative surprises at bay.  The one who forgets about resting and trusting in the continually unfolding nature of all things. The one who wants to go it alone and get out there and make it happen.  The one who thinks her hands are the only hands on the levers of life.  The little locally focused me who gets a little crazy even at the idea of rest and trust.  What is little me supposed to do while bigger me is off resting and trusting?  Somebody has to DO something.  We can’t just sit here resting and trusting with a dumb ass smile on our face.  Hurry up, we’ve got worrying to do and plan B’s to execute!

Or do we?  Isn’t all spiritual forgetfulness just a re-run and a boring one at that, stuck in an endless loop with no fast forward button.   Well, I’m not actually in re-runs not literally and not metaphorically because if I were, I wouldn’t be writing about it.  I’d be lost in black and white re-broadcasts desperately searching for my color palette by adding more drama to the mix.  But if I should re-visit re-runs, I hope to remember this.  And especially I hope to recall that nothing very serious is going on here but by now some seriously dull and tiresome re-runs.

Willing to experience aloneness,
I discover connection everywhere;
Turning to face my fear,
I meet the warrior who lives within;
Opening to my loss,
I gain the embrace of the universe;
Surrendering into emptiness,
I find fullness without end.
Each condition I flee from pursues me,
Each condition I welcome transforms me
And becomes itself transformed
Into its radiant jewel-like essence.
I bow to the one who has made it so,
Who has crafted this Master Game.
To play it is purest delight;
To honor its form–true devotion.

midsummer-eve2Midsummer Eve~Edward Robert Hughes

The sun is making it’s final appearance for the day.  You walk out to your mailbox to pick up the day’s mail and barely notice the long shadows reaching across the ground you walk on.  You are tired from the day’s events and ready to settle in for the evening.  Nothing today has been particularly unusual or out of the ordinary.  Nothing that would foretell the next moment that held the possibility of changing everything.  Reaching into the mailbox your fingers instantly touch upon an envelope that is hand addressed to you.  The envelope appears weathered as if it’s traveled some distance.  There’s no return address and the postmark is blurred and illegible.  You walk inside and sit down in your favorite chair.  You open the letter, it addresses you with the familiarity of your first name and this is what you read:

“You’re on the cusp of experiencing welcome relief on a subject that’s been bothering you for some time.  This concern that has been troubling you, is being healed behind the scenes in surprising ways, even as you read this.  God wants you to know that you have reason to smile, as the fairies of the Universe are working on a solution that is so creative, so ingenious that you never would have guessed it would come in this manner.” *

You stare wide eyed at the letter.  You breathe a deep breath of relief.  Muscles you didn’t even realize you held so tightly, soften now.  You smile an inner smile that just lights you up from the inside out.  And from this day forward you live at that end point, knowing the solutions are speeding their way to you.  You have no way of knowing what it will look like or when it will come.  You’re content not knowing when or how or even why.  You are happily willing to rest here in this knowing.  Now you know beyond a shadow of a doubt you are heard, you are answered, you are known, you are cherished.

Having worked with the 30 day blessing way challenge the last several days, I find that I can’t honestly come by “it’s all a blessing”.  Whether I know what the blessing is or defer judgment on it, my heart just isn’t going along for the ride.  But here is what I can honestly come by — I am exactly where I am supposed to be.  How do I know that?  I know I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be because this is where I am!  It’s as simple as that.  So here I am and I don’t like nor want everything about where I am right now.  What am I supposed to do about it?  Analyze it, change it, fix it, shift it, intend it differently or my old fall back, blame myself.  No, no, none of that.

Supposing instead I meet the moment with — I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be?  What if I met all my moments with I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be?  Haven’t I been writing about this all along?  It’s all ok and I’m ok.  Didn’t I say I was giving myself carte blanche to have it all?  Didn’t I say it’s ok to have nightmares?  I did, I do, and I have.  I also said: bring it on!  So the Universe has upped the ante and brought it on.  Ok, so who are you now, Bethie?

Byron Katie calls it loving what is.  I’m not loving what is, I’m loving me and making peace with what is.

Recently I watched the finale for a TV show entitled Flash Forward.  It’s the only show I remember seeing that dealt specifically with consciousness.  The question it explored was, is it free will or is it fate, or is it some combination of both.  Unfortunately the show’s been cancelled but it left behind a message that really said it all to me and I quote it below:

“Sometimes what happens in the world makes us forget. You choose what’s next and you’ll wind up right where you’re supposed to be.”

No right, no wrong — meeting each moment without resistance.  Who am I now?  This is who I am — meeting each moment with an open, receptive heart knowing I am *exactly* where I am supposed to be.

When we learn to trust the Universe, we shall be happy, prosperous and well.  We must learn to come under that Divine Government, and accept the fact that Nature’s table is ever filled.  Never was there a Cosmic famine.  “The finite alone has wrought and suffered, the Infinite lies stretched in smiling repose.”  God is always God.  No matter what our emotional storm, or what our objective situation, may be, there is always a something hidden in the inner being that has never been violated.  We may stumble, but always there is that Eternal Voice, forever whispering within our ear, that thing which causes the eternal quest, that thing which forever sings and sings.
