Image Locale

You didn’t come forth because you wanted guarantees.  And you knew you would ‘land on your feet beautifully’ because you knew the Divine that is back of every thing.  And you didn’t come forth to have some one dimensional point A to point B experience.  You came forth for the multi-layered adventure of it all, because you knew the Joy was in that moment-to-moment Creation, the hands in the clay, paint on the canvas experience that only you can have.

I wrote the above a few years year ago.  I think it ties in nicely with something I heard the other day: the gods rarely draw in straight lines.  And it also fits well with my other blog post entitled: Who Knows What’s Good What’s Bad.  Given that I have all of this understanding, at this point, you’d think I would be so going with the flow, just be-bopping along.  No more panty wad twisting for this girl.  But no, that would be way too easy :).

Yet here’s the thing – I am getting a sense of this other part of me who witnesses the drama, witnesses my reactions and is unaffected by it.  This observer me seems to have a perspective much like the long lens of a camera.  It sees the bigger picture that in the heat of the moment I cannot.  It senses an unfolding beyond this moment.  It rests in a knowing that all really is well and that all my endings are happy endings.  She has always been there.  The difference today, is that when she quietly beckons me, I begin to hear her now.  She has gone ahead and prepared the way for me.  I only need to take a moment, breathe and remember.

We are beings of vibrating, oscillating energy and we can operate on both receive and transmit.  I note that I sometimes do quite a bit of transmitting.  There’s an inner conversation often running in the background relating to things I observe: I like this, I prefer that, this is good, don’t like that and so on.

What happens when I begin to allow myself to be in an open, receptive mode?  I take a few conscious deep breaths, feel myself grounded in this body and allow the inner commentary to quiet.  I slow down and enter the still waters of just pure awareness.  Pure awareness which is free from my personal take on anything; an observer largely aloof and uninterested in drawing conclusions or forming opinions about people, situations or events.  And I cease being the proverbial blade of grass blowing whichever way outer conditions are blowing today.  I pay things “no mind” — literally.  Now, I am one who receives.  Resting in receiving, I discover an intelligence and a wisdom that transcends my experience as a locally focused being.

Imagine this profound peace found while resting in pure awareness.  Situations that seemed dense and immovable now seem porous and malleable when I discontinue the running commentary about what looks like the facts and outer conditions.  To discontinue, to break the continuity, interrupt the transmission of a particular consciousness I hold towards anything is exactly what allows these situations to become more fluid and flexible.

Anything can change in an instant and these things do change as we do.

You can change your world by rearranging your thoughts — having them travel
only in one direction, that is toward the fulfillment of your desire.

There is only one cause, and that is consciousness. Your consciousness is the
center from which your world mirrors and echoes the state you presently
occupy. Now, a state can be defined as all that you believe and consent to as
being true. So, if you want your world to change, you must determine what you
want to accept and consent to as true before you can change it. To arrive at a
certain definition of self, you must begin by uncritically observing your
automatic reaction to an event, for your reaction defines your state. And you can,
without getting out of your chair, rebuild your world by changing your level (or
state) of being. This is done by observing yourself uncritically as you react
to life. If you do not like the circumstances of your life, acknowledge its
cause. Be willing to admit that the circumstances are only objectifying what you
are conscious of, then change your consciousness and your world will change.
If you react to that which is being objectified, you bind yourself to a
certain, level of awareness, but if you refuse to react, the thread is broken. Stop
being conscious of something unlovely, for every unlovely thought causes you
to walk in psychological mud. Rather, identify yourself with beauty, with love
(the Your in you) and you will ascend the infinite level of your own being and
change the circumstances of your life.

Your state of awareness, like a magnet, attracts life. Steel, in its demagnetized
state is a whirling mass of electrons, but when the electrons are faced in one
direction, the steel is magnetized. You do not add to the steel to make it
magnetic or take anything away to demagnetize it. This same principle is
true for you. You can change your world by rearranging your thoughts and having
them travel only in one direction, and that is toward the fulfillment of your

Watch your reactions to life, for any change in the arrangement of your mind
which can be detected by self-observation, will cause a change in your outer
world. It is important to learn to be passive to that which is unlovely and
unacceptable to you. In that way, you are awakening the dynamic one within.
And when you find your inner being, you will discover that the qualities you
condemn in others are really in yourself. Then you will know the secret of
forgiveness, for as you forgive yourself, the others are forgiven.
All things (not just a few) are made manifest by the light, and everything
manifested is light. The moment you consent to a thought, it is made manifest.
It could not come into being unless you consented to its expression by being
aware of it. The universe moves with motiveless necessity as it has no motive
of its own. Rather, it moves under the necessity of manifesting the
arrangements of the minds of men. This teaching is to awaken you to your light,
and the awakening begins by self-observation.

The inner conversation – we are all having one during our waking hours, off and on throughout the day.  Those inner conversations that are consistently repeated are the ones deemed to have a creative force in our lives.  They are a good indicator of what we believe and what we take to be real in this world. And if the inner conversation is saying how fabulous you are and how great life is, then go live your groovy life and stop reading this now.  But if you have a day where the inner conversation is not so desirable, then read on.

When you dream at night, do you ever get the sense that there is the you experiencing the dream and there is also someone watching the dream unfold? There is this other presence on the periphery that is not experientially in the dream but on the outskirts of it just watching.  This other presence is really a version of you, an internal you.  She or he is a neutral observer in the dream and holds no opinion or judgment about what is unfolding.  This other presence is unmoved by circumstances or events.

You can re-create this version of you, this neutral watcher/observer, this internal you, in your waking hours.  Next time you are having a less than desirable inner conversation, take a deep breath.  I love conscious deep breaths, they are such a good cleansing and transitioning tool.  Now, in your mind’s eye, imagine that you are driving a car.  Feel the steering wheel, your foot on the pedal, driving down the road and still engaged in your inner conversation.  Now glance to your side over to the passenger seat and see another version of yourself seated in the passenger seat.  This is your other presence, the version of you who is on the periphery.  The one who has no investment in your inner conversation, is unmoved by it.  It just watches you.  This presence is completely neutral.  Yet, it is also you.  You are both the one having the inner conversation and the one on the periphery.

Now try maintaining this inner conversation while you are behind the wheel of your imaginary car with your other presence seated on the passenger side. It’s not possible any more.  And you did nothing to try and alter that conversation except play a little imaginary game that momentarily shifted your awareness.  Now, unencumbered by less than desirable inner conversations, you are free to turn your attention to the inner conversations that put a little spring in your step and leave you spontaneously humming for seemingly no good reason.

The world is a friendly place, when we are inwardly a friendly place and befriending the self is ultimately to love oneself.

I wake up in the morning and I consciously create my day the way I want it to happen. Now sometimes, because my mind is examining all the things that I need to get done, it takes me a little bit to settle down and get to the point of where I’m actually intentionally creating my day. But here’s the thing: When I create my day and out of nowhere little things happen that are so unexplainable, I know that they are the process or the result of my creation. And the more I do that, the more I build a neural net in my brain that I accept that that’s possible. (This) gives me the power and the incentive to do it the next day.

So if we’re consciously designing our destiny, and if we’re consciously from a spiritual standpoint throwing in with the idea that our thoughts can affect our reality or affect our life — because reality equals life — then I have this little pact that I have when I create my day. I say, I’m taking this time to create my day and I’m infecting the quantum field. Now if (it) is in fact the observer’s watching me the whole time that I’m doing this and there is a spiritual aspect to myself, then show me a sign today that you paid attention to any one of these things that I created, and bring them in a way that I won’t expect, so I’m as surprised at my ability to be able to experience these things. And make it so that I have no doubt that it’s come from you, and so I live my life, in a sense, all day long thinking about being a genius or thinking about being the glory and the power of God or thinking about being unconditional love.

I’ll use living as a genius, for example. And as I do that during parts of the day, I’ll have thoughts that are so amazing, that cause a chill in my physical body, that have come from nowhere. But then I remember that that thought has an associated energy that’s produced an effect in my physical body. Now that’s a subjective experience, but the truth is is that I don’t think that unless I was creating my day to have unlimited thought, that that thought would come.

Great quote, but what does it mean?

When we are enmeshed in identifying with our own story,
whatever it is, we can’t see the bigger picture or perhaps
even the picture at all.

How do we step out of the story and into a more neutral,
observer state?

There are many ways really.  One is to cultivate a willingness
to suspend judgment about a thing.   Refrain from drawing any
final conclusions.  Understanding that the nature of all things is
continually unfolding.

Another way to slip into one who observes you in the story – without
actually engaging in the whole of it emotionally, is to ask the first
two questions of Byron Katie’s work:

Is this true?
Can I absolutely know that this is true?

Once you ask the questions it seems to automatically snap you out
of being in the story while you question it’s validity in the first

How else might we slip from one who is ‘in the frame’ to one who
is ‘outside of the frame’?  Or phrased Abraham’s way: one who has
his or her nose pressed into ‘what is’ or worse yet :) one who has
his or her face pressed into the pillow of ‘what is’.  A friend of mine
described it as looking at a gorgeous quilt but if you walk up to it,
plant your face up against one square of the quilt, that’s all you ever
see, a tiny section and a blurry one at that.  Step back and the beauty
of the entire quilt begins to take shape.

Step back and allow the Universe to show you the beauty of all your
quilts.  Step back with a faith that all that happens is unfolding for
your good.  Step back with an unwavering faith that this goodness
operates back of all things.

Step back.

I’m not going to talk about commitment in quite the way you
are used to hearing about it.  This is about a different kind
of commitment, an unwitting or unconscious commitment.

I took a look at what I was committing to after being inspired
by an online friend.  She was inspired by reading “Realities”
which is an ebook available for $10.00 over at The Field Center.
I then added another piece to it that really cemented the wake
up call to the choices I make for myself.  And once we wake up
to what we are choosing, the possibilities to consciously alter
that are endless.

So I’ll explain:

One day I observed myself in self-talk.  I began to say:

“I am so weary of…”

I stopped myself and I changed the self-talk to:

“I am committed to feeling so weary of…”

Do you hear the difference?  The first example is me lost
in my own story, my own movie, reacting to conditions.  The
other example is me taking radical responsibility for the way
I was feeling.

I then took it up a notch.  The next morning I woke up and started
down the ‘asleep at the wheel of life’ and began to worry.  I heard
my inner worry talk and I stopped it, and said:

I am committed to worrying and I have been unwilling to give that up.

Wow, that really made me stop in my tracks!

Suddenly I began to see tons of self-talk and turn it around with just
this one sentence.

Now I’m like a kid in a candy shop…

This is what else I discovered today….I was watching this guy train
his pit bull puppy and I made an assumption that he was being mean
to him.  I was just about to do that thing where I get lost in my own
movie where Bethie takes the role of “I’m sensitive and it’s painful”
…when I just asked myself what is this really about and it HIT me:

I am committed to seeing others as victimizers, and I have been
unwilling to give that up.

Wait, it gets even better!!  Then the next obvious step hit me:

I am committed to seeing others as needing to be RESCUED,
and I have been unwilling to give that up.

This is beyond soothing, beyond reaching for the better feeling
thought.  If you are like me and come up against stuff over and over
again, it’s inviting you to really take a look at it, really get in there and
see what you are choosing for yourself.

Finally, here’s the other piece.  What I have struggled with the most
in the whole ‘you create your own reality’ new thought movement, is
self-blame.  Look what I’m creating and it sucks, bad creator me.
So I turned it around:

I am committed to blaming myself and I have been unwilling to give
that up.

And then I took the radical responsibility up another notch:

I am committed to victimizing myself and I have been unwilling to give
that up.

Wow.  This technique is opening doors to the patterns that have been
at work in my life.  Finally I realize the one tightening the noose around
my neck is me.  And realizing that and removing all self blame for it
by taking radical responsibility offers complete and utter freedom.  Now
truly there is no place I cannot go.
