Affirmation for the day:

I am a sovereign, sentient* being. No one, no thing can affect my energy without my permission.

Now to put the affirmation to practice. Welcome every opportunity where you give your power away, because it is an opportunity for practice!

Helpful tip: Dr. Joe Dispenza suggests invoking the moniker “change” when you first start down the road with some version of “I don’t like/want/need this.”

Saying “change” is a good idea, but I’d add the breath. Conscious breathing gives you that wee window to make that choice to reaffirm and honor your sovereignty.

Say “change”, like you mean it, even if it’s silent. Then inhale for four seconds, hold it at the top of your head for four seconds, now exhale for another four. The counting with the breath will aid in interrupting any stress chemicals before they get a running start in the body. Repeat as necessary.

Now welcome your opportunities, and the chance to practice a whole new way of being! Change does take practice and commitment.

As this sovereign, sentient being, keep this in mind:

Bold statement, eh?! Because mostly everybody’s doing it, right?!

What’s wrong with complaining? It’s an outer reality-centric stance. It means you have declared that external circumstances dictate how you think and feel. One can’t be a sovereign, sentient being, and a complainer.

Complaining also says I am a victim of external situations and people. “They” or “it” make me feel such and such.

Complaining also releases stress chemicals in the body, that lead to disorder, illness, and decline in the body.

Yes, it can be hard to change old habits that have a well worn groove. How to change them then? One awareness at a time. Notice where the tendency to complain shows up, and consciously choose to withdraw your attention from it. But this is not a grin and bear it exercise. Won’t change a darn thing that way.

If your choices are to complain or stifle it, then spend more time in meditation or whatever leaves you knowing and feeling the “rapture of being alive”.**

The external world gets way less enticing when what goes on inside is a love affair with your God. You’ll eventually want that more than anything.

Somewhere, I read about the value of taking 30 conscious breaths.  I tried it and since I don’t regularly meditate, this was no small task; thoughts kept thinking themselves.  I decided when that occurred, I would simply start all over again.  Well, I could be here into next week still trying to take 30 conscious breaths!  Then I laughed at myself – who made up that rule – the conscious breathing brigade?!

It’s amazing actually how much thinking is going on in my head.  In another modality I study, 9 star ki astrology, my principal element is a 4 or yin wood.  We are known as the “over-thinkers”.  However, Albert Einstein was a 4, so there you go, there’s value to that “over-thinking”.  Yes, indeed!

I think a lot, it’s true, my mind darts in all sorts of places.  In fact, my husband often asks me – what are you talking about now?  I’ll start a conversation midstream of the one that’s already been going on in my head.

My point is, and I do have one – even big thinkers can take 30 conscious breaths.  Here’s how you do it:

As the abdomen rises and falls with each breath that you are counting, any thinking that begins to come up, just label it “thinking”.  Keep breathing and counting each breath.  There may be lots of thoughts to label “thinking”, you may lose count, guess the count then and just keep breathing.  After a bit, it’s like riding wave after undulating wave.

It is a beautifully relaxing, balancing and grounding process that could be done anywhere.

And now that I “think” of it, any thought that engages suffering on any level, can simply be labeled “thinking” followed by a few conscious breaths anywhere, anytime.  No need to identify it any further than simply to call it “thinking”.

A) There’s no judgement in the label “thinking”

B) There’s no story in it either

Ever wonder where the repository is for all these things we are advised to “let go” of?  Is it in some remote location where the other half of long lost socks and gloves go?  I don’t know but I have pondered how it is that we actually do “let go” short of changing the subject — so I’ve come up with a process of sorts.

I encountered a meditation at the end of Sonia Choquette’s audio book, “Trust Your Vibes”.  There’s an instruction in it to let the part of you that calls itself “I” to move out of your right eye.  This would be the locally focused “I”.

I decided to adapt this and use it for all fears, judgments, perceptions, beliefs, any thoughts that are not in harmony with my highest good.  When a thought like this is felt, stop and release it, let it go, through the right eye.  My friend Ahmee suggested adding the words — “not real” as she releases it.  Another idea is to say — I release you and return you back to your “native nothingness”.  Native nothingness is a phrase used by Florence Scovel Shinn.  Saying “not real” is equivalent to I release you and return you back to your native nothingness, the latter is a little more disruptive of the dissonant thought.  I think anything that disrupts and disturbs a pattern, can help change it.

There’s also a grounding exercise that Sonia uses with one hand on the heart and one hand on the belly.  I decided to adapt this too with a small meditation that can be done at any time of the day, as many times as you would like to use it.  Right now I like to begin my day with this and then sprinkle it throughout the day.  It is one hand on heart and one hand on solar plexus or the upper part of your belly.  Take four slow, deep conscious breaths with the solar plexus expanding on the inhale and collapsing on the exhale while mentally repeating the words: allow Spirit to flow freely through me today.  Allow me to have thoughts that support my highest good today.  Add anything you feel called to say in this short meditation.

This breathing exercise of four conscious breaths, as instructed above, can be used at any time of the day without the hand on the heart, etc.  Feel yourself tightening up in the middle of a meeting, or in traffic, or at any time, stop and do those four, slow, full conscious breaths.  This will pull your awareness away from what isn’t serving you and summon a new and refreshing energy.
