This poem is one of my personal favorites that I’ve written. I wrote it after having gone in and through a particularly difficult time. It continues to bring me solace today.

past the borders of happiness and unhappiness
a rim of fire oaks bid me on the blue horizon

smooth hand like leaves held me there
while the first hard rain fell

I kneeled and leaned into the heady fragrance
of an ancient wisdom revealed
beneath the old rough timber

it spoke of the delicate balance in being
at once firmly rooted while gently yielding
whenever the fall winds swept through

I heard of the necessity of winter’s annual arrival
for stillness is the silent cathedral of the earth

I learned that what drops away gives rise to rich black loam
so that nothing that is cherished ever perishes

listening intently now, the old knowing timber whispered
how it never seeks to contain what cuts deep

no, you give it up to the low slung clouds overhead
to be carried on the wings of the air

This poem is a favorite of mine; I wrote it several years ago.  The first verse is the tag line you see whenever you visit Simply Blessed.  The “Beloved” I refer to here is God or Spirit, Universe, Divine Creator, Supreme Being, Source, All That Is.

Messiah

I have fallen between the cracks
and landed in the spaces
where love never fails

Beloved, you are my captor
and I am bound by your love

I hear you whisper softly
don’t speak. words fail here, just listen

churning on the seas of your desire
I am the rising and the falling

the beginning and the ending
the fullness and the emptiness

journey to the furthest point of your yearning
I am the anguish and the exaltation

I am the grain of sand awakening the pearl

I am the morsel you are tasting
be it bitter or sweet

quench your deepest thirst here
where you think I’m not

I Am.

raindrops

heavy your skies labored today

rain
hail
rain
hail again
and snow

sights and sounds that left me
breathless at my window

deep sunset now and I am
swept in crimson and coral

raindrops hang like glass ornaments
look closely and I am happily lost

deep inside your world.

Oh, it’s that time of year again!  I re-post this poem I wrote in ’09 every Spring now.  This year the cherry blossoms beckon to be teased out.  Perhaps they will hear the soft echo of this poem in the air, coaxing them every so gently, come be with us…we sing your praises…you won’t be here for long, but we notice, oh, yes, we do notice!

o, to be held captive
inside your cherry blossoms

pinned to your creamy folds

like a bumble bee chubby with pollen
too deliciously full to move

until I am drunk with your fragrance
intoxicated with wonderment

stunned with awe
speechless with amazement

and tumble out onto the splendid
soft green earth filled with the
pulsing passion of being alive

peaceful

what will you do…?

when the worry is gone
when the self condemnation is gone
when fear is not your bedfellow

what will you do with that new wide open space

lay down in it
breathe deeply
close your eyes
you are home

a windless night
in such silence
I hear a lone tree whisper:

I am the container
you pour yourself into
from cradle to coffin

the splintered steps
you daily climb

the way in
and the way out
a rusty hinged wooden door

I frame the perfect piece of art
that stirs and awakens you

I am the sacred journal by your bedside
the poignant pages of yesterday’s resolve

the day will come, it always does
and you’ll unfurl your life
inside my cardboard boxes

driving by that row of pines
one last time

more than a second chance
I’ll be your everything.

Our nearly three month old puppy, Nanuk, passed suddenly this weekend.  You see him below in a picture taken last week.

There are many wonderful pet loss poems out there but none seemed to contain the language for what my heart wants to say.  So I decided to re-post this poem I wrote a few years ago, to remind me of two things: nothing that is cherished ever truly perishes and Nanuk is in the heavens now, carried on the wings of the air.
