Zest for Life

To a questioner who said that he had died four times in this lifetime, and
asked what came back with him each time…

“The easy answer is zest for life came back with you, clarity about who you
are. In other words, wanting a simple life is clearing out the clutter,
releasing the stuff that doesn’t matter, being real and in the moment, and
giving your undivided attention to what is right before you.”

On a summer morning
I sat down
on a hillside
to think about God —

a worthy pastime.
Near me, I saw
a single cricket;
it was moving the grains of the hillside

this way and that way.
How great was its energy,
how humble its effort.
Let us hope

it will always be like this,
each of us going on
in our inexplicable ways
building the universe.
