“This day will not come again.” ~ Thomas Merton
First blush of morning erupts
Songbirds usher in fresh beginnings
* * *
This day shall not come again
* * *
Summer afternoon arrives on the tuft of a breeze
Expectant sunflowers bow their ample heads
* * *
This day shall not come again
* * *
Evening huddles in city streets and forests
Day surrenders to the gentle hush of another night
* * *
This, too, shall not come again

this is fantastic.
I like the way the poem was segmented into different sized portions.
The method works well.

Thank you Richard (artswebshow). That segmenting was a last minute thing. I really wanted the sense of being present with it all. I visited your blog and I think you are an amazing poet.

Stunning images, the header, the post image and the font.
In my mind, this was the summer in a beautiful violet planet. As simple as a summer day (But my hometown records 122 degrees :-))

Such lovely words…the picture accompanying the poem is lovely as well.
Thank you Suzi!
Lovely poem, and so true. I like the segmenting. What made you change the last line so it is not identical to the two preceding that are identical?
You’ve managed to point out the subtly of nature that can not be duplicated the following day. Yes the sun will rise tomorrow but it will cast its light on a different earth, a different day, a flower a day older, a sunset better rehearsed. A gentle way of reminding me that my own today’s will not unfold the same way twice. No matter how routine or mundane, like the “Summer afternoon [that] arrives on the tuft of a breeze” each day is unique in its unfurling.
Splashofexpression — And you’ve managed to comment in such a way that absolutely touches my heart. Thank you for really getting the essence of this poem. Blessings, Beth
Morganna, the word “day” is in the line just previous to the last line, that’s why I changed the wording of that final line.
beautiful images, beautiful poem, well done
